Restaurant Jane, Part II Montreal

Welcome to the food! I ordered the roasted beets to start. They were chopped to bite-sized pieces that were perfectly tender and nicely complimented by the horizontally sliced chevre chaud that lay on top of the beets like a warm, creamy blanket. Both the Jane Salad and the Caesar Salad were comprised of Roman lettuce though the former had an Italian style dressing while the latter had an obvious Caesar dressing along with hot cheese puffs (the warm temperature a nice touch).
For the mains, five out of seven people in our party ordered the Taco pizza on recommendation of the waitress. Served on a platter, each pizza is an oval-shaped mammoth of a meal – almost everyone took some home. The thick crusty dough enabled the toppings to be served generously – on the Taco pizza there was ground beef, salsa, avocado, sour cream, cheddar and coriander which, not surprisingly made the pizza taste almost exactly like a taco… a strange and wonderful sensation. I felt there could have been more avocado to up the creaminess and balance out the ground meat on the pizza. On the Buffalooza, there were pieces of Buffalo chicken wings, jalapenos for a touch of spice, cheddar and blue cheese to finish and on the Greekza, spinach, souvlaki, olives, Greek salad and a thick drizzling of tzatziki sauce. These both received rave reviews.
Two items were on the dessert menu – rhubarb and strawberry tartinette with a dollop of creme fraiche on top and a Bailey’s creme brulee . Both delicious. The tart was firm on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside, sort of like the concept behind chocolate lava cake. Most creme brulees I have eaten have a relatively firm top of caramelized sugar, but Jane’s was hard – you had to forcefully tap the top to break through. Once inside though, you were able to really taste the Bailey’s flavor infused into the dessert. The contents of the small cup were literally gobbled up in seconds.
This was my fifth time there, so clearly I love the place. When the first-timers I was with were asked whether or not they would come back, they definitively answered “No doubt about it”.
