Le Caractère Chinoise Montreal

Posted By Alex Chinien Aug 29 2011 · 0 comments · Dining Out, Plateau

This has been a favourite spot of mine for years. It’s close proximity to my apartment and park lafontaine, very friendly staff and unbeatable table d’hote price speak for itself. To top it all off, it’s bring your own wine and they even have a small terrace. I’ve eaten here over 20 times and never had a bad experience. This summer, the restaurant underwent major renovations and this was my first visit back.

Historically it had been a cash only restaurant until now, they had a deal with the depanneur across the street allowing its customers to withdraw cash at no additional fee. The staff informed me that they will soon have a debit/credit machine. The entire interior received a facelift with new plates and furniture as well. I even saw some new faces, our favorite waiter Alex was not in the house last weekend. The chef, Jimmy is still in charge of the kitchen but their menu has changed quite a bit. They’re table d’hote price is perhaps a little more expensive then it used to be but almost all meals will still run you less than 20$. This includes a soup, appetizer, main and dessert. The quality of the food has actually gone up from before, I particularly enjoyed the duck roll appetizer and Spicy Thai Chicken main.

It’s menu is generally pan-asian covering thai sweet/sour dishes as well as General Tao and Crispy Garlic Pork. There are vegetarian options available as well including the Tofu and Cashew Vegetable Sir Fry. The dessert is an old favourite Deep Fried Bananas with brown sugar topping. I can’t recommend this place enough, it’s a joy to show up with a bottle of wine and have a four course meal for under 20$.
