Keung Kee Montreal

Don’t be put off by the shoddy exterior – Keung Kee is one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in the city. While it is true that the place could be cleaner and more well kept, it is impossible to argue against the fact that the food they serve is seemingly straight out of a kitchen in China. Having been clients of this restaurant for years now, this time we decided to change up our usual routine and try some new dishes.
First up was the pork rib soup with red dates, carrots and sun dried cloud mushrooms. The ribs were impossibly tender, with the meat falling off the bone with the slightest touch. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the soup is good for your chi (qi). Bonus points! One of Keung Kee’s classic dishes is the smoked pig feet with jelly fish (it is easy to mistake the jelly fish for sea cucumber due to the color and texture. Now you know!). Really delicious, especially with the vinegar sauce poured on top. Also not too filling, considering the meat is sliced so thinly. Another solid Chinese dish is the pork tenderloin sauteed with garlic stems, great on top of white rice. The deep fried tofu with fish and shrimp paté on top was one of my favorites of the entire meal as it was crispy on the outside, soft but firm on the inside, just how I like my tofu. Make sure to give it a good dip in the soya sauce to get the proper taste. Lastly we had the soft shell crab seasoned with salt and pepper. At this point I was getting pretty full so I didn’t eat too much of this dish. It was quite spicy though so for those of you who are a little more spice averse, make a special request to ask for the dish to be spiced a little less intensely.
