Montreal’s beloved taco truck Grumman ’78 is all grown up with a stationary location to call it’s own. After years of leading a nomadic life, some weekends parking at Nouveau Palais, sometimes at 630 de Courcelle, Grumman ’78 has opened a shop without wheels in the faubourg.
There was a time when the only reason anybody ventured into the faubourg was to make a pad thai pilgrimage to cuisine bangkok. Then after Yuki Ramen opened, things started to pick up and now with Grumman ’78 – the faubourg is on it’s way to being a culinary hub.
We arrived at around noon and the lineup at Grumman dwarfed the lineup at cuisine bangkok (directly across from each other), quite a sight to see! The Grumman team did a great job keeping up with the demand and the lineup was moving at a good pace.
We began with the Chicken Mole taco which was, of course, delicious. The chicken was braised in tomatillo cocoa and coffee sauce with rice, corn cream and green onions. We also ordered the Pork and Cabbage taco which consisted of pork belly, cabbage, julienne apples and herb puree. The Vietnamese inspired Banh Mi Taco was filled with roasted pork belly in sweet oyster sauce and pickled carrots, daikon, roasted sesame seeds, green onion and clinatro. The vegetarian option is the Pimentos Feta taco with red beans braised in pimenton served with refried black beans, fresh radish, pickled onion and feta cheese.
All these tacos are more filling than they look (around $4 per taco) and if you’ve ever had Grumman tacos before, you know they are all amazing. One pleasant surprise for Grumman veterans is the drinks. We tried the horchata, Jugo Verde and Hibiscus cold tea. All these drinks (even the water) are served in plastic bags with a straw fastened with a twist tie.
The cornbread and tomatoes were quite good, the cornbread being crunchier than we expected and covered in a citrus cream sauce. We caught a glimpse of a raw spicy salmon dish with fennel that they were making that looked really good but unfortunately we were completely full. You absolutely can’t go wrong eating lunch at Grumman ’78, great people and no frills, delicious food.
