County General Toronto

The County General is a lot of things – brunch, lunch, dinner, take-out, delivery, cocktails, wines, micro-brews and above all: bastion of southern hospitality. We couldn’t help but feel like we were stepping into a southern home kitchen when we visited the long, narrow restaurant for brunch last weekend.
Directed by the enthusiasm of our server, we decided to order the Fried Chicken Thigh Sandwich with Buttermilk Chicken, Milk Bun, Avocado Chutney, Coriander and Pickled Red Onion and the Pizza Pocket with Peppers, Onion, Mozzarella, Chorizo, Garlic and Fried Egg (no judgement plz).
To drink we ordered an americano and cinnamon limeade. The americano was strong as hell and woke me right up – the cinnamon limeade was pleasantly sour and spicy. the decor in County General is almost too perfect. We wonder whether it was done professionally or whether the owners themselves happen to have a flair for the american south. Although it was before noon – we couldn’t help but notice the myriad of Kentucky bourbons and dark rums adorning the bar. We definitely aim to come back for a cocktail on our next visit to Toronto.
The Fried Chicken sandwich was super crispy and perfectly warm. The bread was fresh and soft, fusing with the soft inside of the fried chicken with every bite. The avocado chutney and coriander gave a perfect layer of salt and acidity and the pickled red onion came through at the tail end of a bite. Absolutely delicious.
I was hesitant ordering the pizza pocket, as the fried chicken and waffles also sounded delicious. However due to the unconventional nature of this item, I decided to give it try. At one point, I asked myself – what makes this pizza pocket a breakfast food? Did I just order a pizza for brunch?? And when it was served I got my answer. Fried Egg! Of course 😉 This is totally breakfast food.
The pocket was jam packed with peppers, onion and garlic – great for morning breath. The chorizo was ample and the mozzarella cheese was super fresh. Great choice for a breakfast off the beaten path.
The County General is a no brainer for brunch and we can’t wait to go back for dinner. They’ve nailed the southern hospitality, ambiance and bold delicious flavors.
