Mais Montreal
Dec 23 2012Mais Montreal
Restaurant Maïs is finally here. You’ve been waiting for it. Even if you didn’t realize it, all this time… you were craving tacos. Montrealers like myself have long been jealous of the plethora of bone shakingly good tacos Toronto has long enjoyed. Anchored Grand Electric and La Carnita, I have trouble eating anything but tacos whenever I’m in town.

Le Comptoir Montreal
Sep 23 2012Ever since we ate at the black hoof in Toronto, we’ve been bemoaning the lack of top shelf charcuterie in Montreal. We had heard a lot of buzz about Le Comptoir in the past few months and it took us all summer to finally get the chance to try it out.

Voro Montreal
Sep 15 2012Voro will grow on you, but it won’t take long. In fact, by the time you walk out the door you’ll lie and tell people that you’re a regular. It’s a no frills, Mediterranean restaurant on Fairmount – tucked away just around the corner from Parc street.

Les Deux Singes de Montarvie Montreal
Mar 25 2012Several weeks ago, I had the absolute pleasure of accompanying a friend and a classmate to Les Deux Singes de Montarvie for a tasting. The distinctive restaurant name immediately intrigued me. Nada, the current owner of the place explained the story behind the unique name:

Yuukai
Mar 07 2012Yuukai has been one of my favourite restaurants in Montreal since I moved here 6 or 7 years ago. What brought me there initially was the elusive search for a bring your own wine sushi restaurant with good sushi and affordable prices. Restaurants with all of these properties are quite a rare breed in Montreal and Yuukai quickly became one of my go to restaurants.

Nouveau Palais – Episode 2 Montreal
Jan 24 2012After visiting the Librairie Drawn and Quarterly to pick up issue number 2 of David Chang’s new food mag Lucky Peach, we slid next door for some eats at Nouveau Palais. We usually come here late at night to get delicious Grumman tacos but it was nice to come at a more reasonable hour and check out the regular menu.

Fairmount Bagels Montreal
Jan 12 2012Established in 1919 by Russian immigrant Isadore Shlafman – Fairmount Bagel is Montreal’s oldest bagel bakery and I believe its best. I stopped by recently to get a half dozen sesame bagels. I was greeted by a giant wall of bagels which must have been on its way out to cafes and restaurants around the city. After carefully sliding through the towering stacks of bagels I got a deep whiff of delicious freshly cooked bagels being handled by handsome team of bagel professionals. It was all there, the huge mound of uncooked bagel dough the size of a fatboy, the giant wood fire oven and the piles of classic sesame bagels.

Pizzeria Magpie Montreal
Aug 23 2011Pizzeria Magpie is managed by the same family of restauranteurs as Sparrow (5322 boul. St. Laurent) and is located on Rue Maguire just down the street. I was there for take out, but got the chance to sit down and talk to the friendly staff while my order was prepared. This time I went for the Artichoke Pizza with spinach, fontina, parmesan and tomato sauce. There was a perfect amount of artichokes on the pizza and they were well cooked and tasty to bite into. The crust was crunchy and on the thinner side – all dough is made from Caputo pizza flour. The menu also offers classics like the Margherita as well new ones like the Fennel Sausage pizza.
