Banh Mi Boys Toronto

This place has so much hype it’s ridiculous. Everyone that I’d spoken to in Toronto had already been to Banh Mi Boys and every single person raved about it. When talking about it in groups, people nodded knowingly to each other and proceeded to discuss their favourite sandwiches and sides… for minutes on end. Having had a relatively consistent reign over UrbanSpoon Toronto’s “Talk of the Town” since last year, I made it a point to check the place out this time around.
A steady stream of people cycled in and out of the restaurant, most of them taking their food to go. The seating area designated for those looking to eat their meal on the spot was packed – we were lucky to grab a spot right after some people left. My friend suggested we go with the kimchi fries, citing it as one of her favorite sides. Sounded interesting enough. Ended up literally being a bunch of pickled veg Korean style on top of warm, salted fries with a good squirt of mayo on top. I’ll admit that I was a little dubious at first – the combination sounded a little weird. Then again, what doesn’t taste good on warm fries? Verdict: the kimchi fries were pretty awesome.
As for the sandwiches, we got the five spice pork belly and the duck confit. The pork was tender and juicy. With the help of the “five spice” and the unmistakable crunch of the veggies inside, we devoured the sandwich in minutes. In any case, both were badass: made with fresh, fluffy baguette bread and stuffed with great vinegary pickled carrots and daikon, each was topped with the customary sprigs of cilantro for a nice hit of intense flavor.
Definitely a great spot to check out for quick take-out or a speedy lunch date. Can’t wait to go back!
